How I Became a healthier Wife & Mother

My Plexus Journey
My Plexus Journey
My Healthy family

I knew something needed to change!!

I had brain fog, headaches, and fatigue, I was also dealing with Endometriosis pain, as well as adhesion pain from 2 C-sections.  Life was not a cheerful place I felt very blue and this was not normal for me.  I had tried the traditional approach for my pain, over the counter pain meds, and a prescription for birth control.  They would give some relief.  During my “time of the month” I had to take oc pain meds( Motrin, Excedrin, Tylenol) the full strength, alternated every 2-3 hrs, and wash them down with caffeine or coffee to get relief.  I was not comfortable with all the side effects of the bc, or the painkillers, but I had to function somehow! The Doctors  only answer was “deal with it the best you can and when you need stronger pain meds we will get a prescription for you, and when you can’t control it then we will schedule a hysterectomy”!! I wasn’t even 30!!  We know we wanted to have at least one more child! So I decided to start figuring this out on my own!! I began researching endometriosis and fatigue, the info was enlightening yet confusing! It appeared to be some sort of deficiency or imbalance, but what exactly caused it, the professionals differed on!!

One thing became clear, I (we) needed a diet change! The American diet is killing us! I started out simple, just cutting out high fructose corn syrup and highly processed wheat products. I also began to limit my sugar intake and pay closer attention to food labels. It is surprising what ingredients are in food! Around this time I also came across a medical journal article talking about Estrogen Dominance and what to do to help re-balance the body.  This was a huge turning point in my research! I now had a list of vitamins and minerals, to supplement my diet with, as well as info on how beauty products like hand cream, deodorant, body wash and shampoo were causing more of an imbalance. So I also changed my toiletries to more natural formulas.

In Feb of 2010 we became pregnant with our youngest son. During this pregnancy I developed a severe case of Diastasis Recti (muscle separation in the abdomen wall).  My recovery and journey back to normal (whatever that is) was very long and painful.  I still was sure I’d need the hysterectomy in the future. We felt that if we couldn’t control the Endo naturally we would need to go the stronger med route( so many health risks).

It was in the summer of 2011 and I realized I hadn’t planted or weeded my flower beds, this was highly unusual for me, I am an outdoors person! I was still dealing with Endo pain and pain from the Diastasis Recti! I was discouraged, some months things felt like they were getting better, than the next month they would regress. I knew the answer was out there, I also knew I needed higher quality supplements but wasn’t sure were to find them. It was around this time that I discovered Trim Healthy Mama eating plan and face-book community. THM was a huge answer to prayer, I learned even more about how our bodies and food work together. I was encouraged by other ladies results and this helped me continue to research.

Enter Plexus! I kept hearing about the pink drink and passed it off as a fad! One day I read one of my friend’s personal health story and I knew she wasn’t the type to share something if it wasn’t legit! I chatted with her, and seriously gave the products some of my research time. I was shocked to realize that they were most of the same supplements I was already taking. One of my big issues/headaches with my current supplements was quality control and what to take with what!! Plexus had already done the research for me and had a simple plan.  All their products were dye and GMO free (big deal to me). What I was reading lined up with research I had already done. The focus was on gut health and as I had learned, the gut is the root of all our health!  I decided to try the Triplex for a couple months –Big changes- less headaches, more energy, less endo pain! I then added the multi-vitamin (xfactor) and the omega (megax) . I began to realize I had not reached for the pain meds, the sodas were not as appealing, and I had plenty of energy for my mom sized days!

As each year passes and I look back and see the big leaps forward my health has taken, I can’t help but praise the Maker of the Universe for the timing of his blessings. I am happy to no longer fear the need of a hysterectomy, I have zero endo pain and naps are now a fun luxury instead of a necessity to get through my day!

I look forward to a future of many years of enjoying activities with my boys, a homestead with our own meat and a big garden and orchard! What is your dream my friend?? What if plexus is your answer as well??

The Cropped Modesty Cami~Review and coupon code

A great option for filling the hole left by modern clothing designers!

Ladies I have a neat review for your from Helen’s Head Coverings.

Not only does she make head scarves, she also makes a cropped Modesty Cami! It is designed to fill the gap left by modern clothing designs. I don’t know any lady who couldn’t make good use of one or five of these!! The cropped Modesty Cami is the perfect wardrobe addition!

A great option for filling the hole left by modern clothing designers!
A great option for filling the hole left by modern clothing designers!

I sent her my measurements via facebook messenger, one for the bottom band and one for the height in front, and told her the color I’d like,I choose black in the poly knit! It was that simple!

The package arrived in about 1 week and I was impressed with the quality of the fabric and lace she used!

I put it on and the fit was great, just right! I wore it all day and didn’t have to adjust or re-position!  The material is just slick enough that it doesn’t grab the top layer, this helps create a smooth profile. The arm holes are generous and yet don’t gape! I like also that when I lean forward it doesn’t give anyone an unwanted peep show! It was very hot the day I first wore it and I was so happy not to need to wear a full cami or shell under my blouse! I’m also excited with the idea of wearing it with some of my tee-shirts with lower necks!

I did try it with one of my wide necked tops and the straps showed a bit ( and so did my bra strap), I feel like that a tee that doesn’t normally show your bra straps but is a bit low in the front it would still work great!

Thank You Helen for a quality item to fill a very needed hole!

Now my friends, head over to Helen’s facebook page and order yours today! When you place the order use this code (#thedelightfulcottage15%) to receive 15% off your order!!

Are you in Drought or Irrigation mode??

Broken heart

Are you in Drought or Irrigation mode??

Is your spring dry or bubbling over?

Broken heart
Encouragement for the dry soul!

What is the state of our spirit, our spring of life?  Is it full and are we sharing it?? Or are we all dried up and unhealthy??  The word spring brings to mind endless clear bubbling water! That is the kind of inner climate God wants us to have, springs of living water that we can share with others to replenish them and refresh them and give them life!

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the Springs of Life!!

I have so many friends facing hard times right now whether it be, issues with finances, or housing, loss of a child, infertility, church issues, health or even just simple unhappiness do to a lack of focus! I even find myself in some of those categories! It is a daily struggle to have gladness and to choose joy!  It would be so easy to just let my heart dry up, but I find if I take the time to search there is refreshment to be had!

Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad!

Proverbs 15:13 A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is crushed!.

Prov 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Proverbs 14:30 A tranquil (healing) heart gives life to flesh, but envy makes bones rot!

If our spirit is crushed, when our heart is grieving, times we are sad or feel unloved or unworthy to receive the good, than we truly need a heart refocus and a life-giving spring refilling! We need to submerse ourselves in the Spring of Christ word.  Maybe we are so crushed and dried up that we need friends who care.  Christian friends, with deep well springs, who can drench us with hope and healing! Sometimes that spring water comes in the form of a gift of a smile, or an encouraging card, or maybe it is some gentle loving correction.  There are times we need to pull into a rest stop on the journey of life and listen to wise counsel and reproof! When we are the receiver of the reproof, we must decide if it is given in a life-giving spirit, and if so we must accept and act on it, to receive intelligence to move us forward in our journey!!  Another form of spring water ( I had not thought of) is someone else’s good news! It does our hearts good to hear good news and to rejoice with others. The teaching of the wise is also a source of spring water to our drought cracked souls, we need to listen and apply the wisdom that is given to us!

Proverbs 15:29 – 33 The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayers of the righteous. The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and good news refreshes the bones. The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise. Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence. The fear of the lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

Proverbs 19:8 Whoever gets sense loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will discover good.

Proverbs 14:27a The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,

Proverbs 13:14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.

Proverbs 14:26a In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence,

Proverbs 3:5-8 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes;  fear the Lord, turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

We can share our good news, give an encouraging word, or maybe we are asked to give life-giving reproof, do so with the fear and joy of the Lord. I know we are all called to be a friend, a person who has a cold drink for the fellow journeyman.  We can all be peace planners, blessing givers, spring cleaners, well diggers, heart healers and soul doctors. It doesn’t take silver or gold or a degree in counseling

Proverbs 16:24 Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.

Proverbs 25:20 Whoever sings songs to a heavy heart is like one who takes off (shares) a garment on a cold day, and like vinegar on soda!

Proverbs 25:25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

Proverbs 12:20 Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.

Proverbs 11:25 Whoever brings blessings will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered!

Caring for someone else out of the full spring we are given by God is truly refreshing and life changing!  If we refuse to share the life-,giving spring water, than we are soon doomed to a broken down shack in the middle of the stinky swamp of self-pity or the desert of lifelessness!! Let’s spread the Spring water around my friends!!

Boys Can be Boys, But not Quietly!!

As a mom of all boys, I am always thinking about either feeding them, or keeping them busy! I am a fan of things that keep them occupied but do not take batteries or make noise! I love to see my boys busy with their imaginations and creating something to play with. If you have children tho, you know that even quiet toys make noise when paired with an active imagination.

Tinkertoy Fun

We discovered this toy set, Tinkertoy/K’nex or Kid K’nex and they work with the Duplo legos.  I also discovered with a little searching that you can get bigger sets for a bit better price, they are called K’nex Education.

My very favorite thing about this set/sets is they are very sturdy and can actually be played with, no need to set the creations on a shelf!! They are great for building eye & hand coordination, and encourage skill building and trouble shooting.

Triple F Salad – Fast Frozen Fruit

If you know me in real life, you know that I don’t consider myself a foodie! You also know, if you know me in real life, I do like healthy food. I am also a fan of quick and easy!! I know those three things are not really compatible!! Although once in a while I stumble across a new way to do something that does actually fit all three,

Like my creation of 3F Salad!! Fast Frozen Fruit Salad is a big hit at our house and we almost always have some handy in the freezer.

Laundry is Good Exercise (and so is counting blessings)!

Today I’m doing laundry, and counting my blessings! Both activities are giving me a workout, one physical and one mental! I am learning to wash my laundry like a pioneer women, a modern pioneer women who has running hot water! 🙂

I am here at my camper and laundry is piled up, it is calling my name and the boys are asking if its OK to wear their good jeans ( answer NO!) My #1 problem is in order to use the washers and dryers here at the campground you must be in possession of 10-12$ in quarters per week. Issue #2 My vehicle is not running correctly and my hubby is to busy to spend a day working on it,  ( issue 2b is we are in Texas and don’t know any reputable mechanics). I need the SUV to go get cash, to get the quarters. #3  I’d rather have the 50.00$ in my grocery budget.

Laundry Modern Pioneer Style

I was working on the first load in the tub this morning and feeling very grouchy. I was running fresh warm water for rinsing and gave myself a little talking-to! My attitude is my choice and I’m going to choose gratitude! I am grateful to have a back that doesn’t hurt now, a tub to wash in, warm water to use, and a nice awning to dry stuff from!

Laundry Day

I started listing my blessings while I worked.

#1 It cost less this way, the propane we already have is much more economical to heat the water, and water is included in our site rent we already pay!

#2 I don’t have to drag everything all the way over to the washroom, and then walk back and forth while waiting and changing loads.

#3 My tub is going to be so clean.

#4 The bathroom floor will get a good mopping

#5 I have wifi to use while I wait on items to dry. I haven’t had Wifi for 2 weeks.

#6 My feet and hands are getting quite a mani/pedi.

#7 This is a good prep for me if we ever decide to live on an “off the Grid” homestead someday.

#8 The humidity is so low that the clothing is all drying rather quickly.

#9 I am in possession of several sanity saving devices to help me! ( See this post)

#10 Maybe i’ll save enough to get me one of these cool clotheslines, (aff link) It looks very camper friendly!

It is amazing what choosing gratitude does for your perspective!

Same old, same old story!

We live in a camper and work on a harvest crew!! Sounds so cool and adventurous.

Harvest 2017 Camper train

Well I’m here to inform you it is the same old, same old story!!

There is still dishes, laundry, parenting, school work, parenting, cleaning, parenting, grocery shopping, laundry, entertaining children, … you get the picture! And you get to do all of it in a space the size of a storage unit.

Walk through it with me here

The new part of the old story is, when you live in a tiny house on wheels, there is less of the cleaning and more family togetherness and skill learning.

Family togetherness is all fun and games till you realize not everyone fits on the couch! But it has been good to learn to respect others personal space and privacy even in the small ways.

Three boys on the couch.
Close Neighbors
School under the awning

There are also lots of opportunities for teaching new skills like how to wash dishes in a small space, or take a bath without getting water on the floor, correct procedure for stabilizing the camper, helping check laundry (running over to the laundry room), and to never leaving an empty ice tray!

Dishes With a smile.
Filling Ice trays

New skills for mom also include, drying laundry on the awning edge to save money, cooking in my instant-pot, learning to dump the black tank (sewer), Cooking portable meals, and navigating small towns (thank goodness GPS knows where the P.O. is). My least favorite new skill is refrigerator Tetras.

All in all I’d say that the new part, of the old story, is mostly positive and is allowing for new growth in many areas of our family.

Things that saved my sanity (or at least space)

Our Little Cottage on Wheels

I have discovered several items that have been space savers for us here in a small space and that helps this claustrophobic mom stay sweet.

I am just going to list the items as well as links ( affiliate links) to them if possible! The links are the underlined words!!

I will say that I didn’t get all these items as new , I like me a good 2nd hand shopping day!!

Clip Hangers, I have found these to not be very handy in tight closets BUT they are wonderful for hanging items to dry both inside and out. I currently have my queen sheets flapping in the breeze thanks to these mighty little workers.

Norwex microfiber clothes, These brilliantly designed cloths self-sanitize in the sunshine and are very durable and absorb so much moisture.  Because they don’t stink I am able to go longer between washes.. Love the money savings on the laundry!! My friend Sara Sells this. (they are an awesome company with a great focus and great host rewards)

Tupperware Modular mates, If you know me you know I use and love tupperware. The Modular Mate system has come in very handy here in our camper.  My Friend Carol Sells This. (hint… having a party will get you the best deals)

31 Totes. I discovered real fast that wicker baskets and laundry baskets do not do so well in tight spaces. I am enjoying the versatility and usability of the 31 line., Check out my friend Lou’s website for Ideas and deals,

Hot plate, It is very hot and dry here and we pay separately for our electric… So cooking outside helps keep the camper cooler and the ac running less. and that is were this friendly little gadget comes in.

Folding tables. These tables are space saving life savers and are much easier to move in any situation.

Woven Rugs, I love the nice woven rag rugs for catching dirt and making the space homey. I know you can get these at most any small Mennonite stores.

Outdoor rug. I have an inexpensive outdoor rug outside the camper and it stops so much dirt and sets the scene for a bit of out door living 🙂

Mini Freezer. This has been a true sanity and budget saver. The fridge freezer in the camper is so small I cant fit two loves of bread and 4 ice trays. Having this extra space has helped me be able to buy larger amounts of food at one time.

Rolling Storage shelving. This handy little rolling rack has been my right hand in my kitchen. I use the top to dry dishes, and the racks hold modular mates and cookbooks.

Hanging Drying rack. This is also very handy for laundry drying or for swimming trunks.

Extendable shower rod. This last item saves my bacon on rainy days. I put it in the center of the shower and hang my drying rack from it. Also works good for a random towel or wet item.

Thank you for taking time to read this , Check back, I may add more links as I remember or find new items I like.

Oh the People We Meet!!

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.  Prov 2:6-8 esv

Oh the people we meet.

Finally Loaded and ready to go!

We pulled out of the driveway in VA and headed for TX. All systems were go!  We had a reservation for a KOA near Nashville.  It was a rainy and breezy day but for the most part it looked like it should be good driving. It was only about an hour into the trip and we saw the sun peak through the clouds.

Beautiful sunshine after the rain.

We pulled in to our first fuel stop, topped off the fuel and checked/added air to the tires and grabbed some lunch.  As we pulled out of the fuel stop, we realized the Excursion had developed some sort of issue, It was running rough and didn’t want to idle! We pulled off the bottom of the exit ramp and after a bit of time it smoothed out a bit and we pulled out and continued on. It seemed to pull ok but something still wasn’t quite right.  We thought it was possibly bad fuel.

We hadn’t crossed out of Va and suddenly J said…. Oh we have a blowout on the Trailer! We eased off the edge of the highway and put on the hazards. That didn’t seem to matter much to the drivers passing us just inches away from the Trailer. I told the boys they HAD to stay buckled.  I was very thankful that the flat was on the guardrail side of the trailer and we had a bit of protection. We called roadside assistance but started working at changing it ourselves.  Just as we were finishing the guy showed up. He wasn’t quite sure what to do or if he should even charge us for the call since he didn’t need to do anything. We asked him for a recommendation for getting a new tire and headed to the closest Walmart with a tire center.

Blowout #1

The excursion was really starting to act worse and J was on his phone and talking/messaging his network of Diesel Pro’s. After we got the tire fixed at Walmart we decided to keep going toward our Nashville KOA and hope we make it. Relief doesn’t quite describe the feeling when we arrived at the KOA in Nashville and pulled into our spot! We quickly stabilized the trailer, slid out the slides, unloaded the bunks, found a quick snack for everyone, and fell into bed.

Morning came very quickly, we ate some breakfast and showered. The boys and I began the process of  getting the slides in and the stabilizers up. As we were doing this J was texting and calling contacts that the DPN (Diesel Pro Network) had sent him.  A couple of the guys were willing to help but were not close to our location, but there was one guy who was on our path about 40 min up the road!! We pulled out of the campground and gingerly headed towards the Flying J where we were to meet up with him. He said he would put a computer on it and tell us what he found and then we could decide what to do!

We had to wait about 2 hrs. at the flying J until the guy could come,  we didn’t complain because he was sacrificing his free Saturday to come help us. We just relaxed and people watched. After a while a dark minivan pulled up and a red bearded guy walked over with a water bottle and a computer. RB (Red Beard) got right to work eliminating possible causes, finally after checking for water or gasoline in the fuel and running through codes on the computer, he came to a conclusion. It was most likely a sensor. The issue was that the sensor was in a hard to reach location and the engine was hot. After thinking a bit RB decided to have us follow him 7/10ths of a mile to his shop, and then bring his minivan back to Flying J and eat lunch there at the Dennys.  We followed him and pulled into a parking lot down the rd. He opened a gate and we followed him into an unmarked lot behind another business. He climbed into his service truck so he could bring his family back with him. ( unbeknownst to us, his family was eating lunch at the Dennys, while he was diagnosing our issue.) We got into his minivan and headed back up to the flying J. He sat down with his family and ate the food she had ordered for him, (who knows if it was even still warm) We ordered and ate our food then headed back to RB’s secret ford mechanic shop. By the time we pulled in RB had already dismantled the air box and coolant overflow tank and drained the coolant and was waist deep under the hood working at getting the sensor out. While the guys were working, I visited just a bit with his wife, and the boys payed with his two boys.  RB replaced the sensor (he just happened to have one in stock) and J and he reassembled everything and cranked it up. It worked perfectly!!!  RB and J took it for a test run and he pronounced it ready to run for another 100,000 miles!  We paid our bill, thanked him and shook hands. We pulled back out onto the highway and continued our westward journey!

We arrived very late at our OK. KOA, but because we had reserved our spot there was an envelope with our name and spot marked on it at the office! We pulled in, and went through the steps of getting everything ready to go to bed.  We slept very well and woke to a beautiful Sunday morning in OK.

Sunday Morning in OK

We didn’t hurry to pull out, we ate breakfast , washed a couple loads of laundry, and straightened up some stuff in the camper. As we were working in the camper, the KOA owner walked up and introduced himself. He had noticed our state and last name and wanted to meet us, turns out he had spent time at EMU!

Around lunchtime we headed west, enjoying the changing scenery! We were going through Oklahoma City when we had the second blowout on the trailer! This time we were near an exit and able to pull off the road much further and were under an overpass, which gave us shade! We didn’t even call roadside assistance, in less than a half hr we were back on the rd.

Blowout #2

Google maps came in handy again in finding a Walmart outside of OK city limits with a tire center. We pulled into the Walmart and the boys and I went in to get some supper and use the restrooms. When we came back through the tire center we discovered that we had chosen a very competent and friendly tire center. They were already finished and had even helped J swap a couple tires around so that the two new tires would be in the rear.  The friendliness of strangers had once again helped us on our  westward way!

The scenery was very beautiful and we were enjoying our adventure, but it wasn’t over yet. The turbo on the excursion started to malfunction, (this is a very necessary part of a diesel engine)and the engine was starting to get to hot. We pulled into a Loves parking lot and J again started to tap into the knowledge of the DPN.

Unscheduled Stop.

We were not sure what it was, maybe a bad turbo, cracked up-pipes, or just stuck turbo vanes. Since it was Sunday eve we decided to just “make camp”. There was a motel right beside the Loves and we noticed a large RV parked there and decided to join them.  The boys rode bike, scooter & rip stick, we ate supper and got the camper set for the night. J had made contact with a mechanic that could come out around noon on Monday, so we just settled in for the evening.

We all slept well and woke to a beautiful sunny but windy monday. When we stepped out of the camper we noticed the RV beside us had the front open and it wasn’t long before a Ford dealership service truck pulled in and a couple tech’s were checking something out.  The owner of the RV introduced herself to us and asked where we were from. Turns out we both came from the same area of Va, Elkton to be exact!!  The ford tech’s couldn’t figure out her problem, so she called another mechanic that was recommended by her RV place.  As we visited, J started checking out the issue on her RV and was able to narrow it down to a control box.

Helping the neighbor

When the Wise ol mechanic showed up, he concurred with J. diagnosis and put a band-aid fix on it to get her to his shop. Then he looked over at our rig with the hood up and asked what was wrong with it. J. gave him the rundown and WM had J start the Excursion.  The engine and turbo sounded fine,  but he gave us directions to his shop and told us to see what it did while we drove there. The WM’s shop was along the highway in the direction we were headed! J contacted the other mechanic that was going to come and found out he hadn’t even started our way yet. He was good with us having the other, closer mechanic, help us. Quickly we got the camper ready to travel and headed toward WM’s shop. The Excursion ran perfectly, no turbo issue! We pulled into his shop in line behind the RV.  We told him that it ran fine and his expert advice was “put it in the wind and continue”!  So we took the Wise ol mechanic’s advice and proceeded west once again.

It was pretty amazing to see the changing landscape as we continued west. The Texas border came into view and we pulled over and took pictures and rejoiced at arriving in TX safely!

Almost there!

As the journey continued we were wide eyed with wonder at the unique landscape and took pictures like tourists! There were so many unique things that we noticed (more on that in another post) but it was a wonderful feeling to see our destination come into view.

Praise be to the Lord for the many details large and small that were solved and his able grace and protection as we traveled.
