Are you in Drought or Irrigation mode??

Broken heart

Are you in Drought or Irrigation mode??

Is your spring dry or bubbling over?

Broken heart
Encouragement for the dry soul!

What is the state of our spirit, our spring of life?  Is it full and are we sharing it?? Or are we all dried up and unhealthy??  The word spring brings to mind endless clear bubbling water! That is the kind of inner climate God wants us to have, springs of living water that we can share with others to replenish them and refresh them and give them life!

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the Springs of Life!!

I have so many friends facing hard times right now whether it be, issues with finances, or housing, loss of a child, infertility, church issues, health or even just simple unhappiness do to a lack of focus! I even find myself in some of those categories! It is a daily struggle to have gladness and to choose joy!  It would be so easy to just let my heart dry up, but I find if I take the time to search there is refreshment to be had!

Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad!

Proverbs 15:13 A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is crushed!.

Prov 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Proverbs 14:30 A tranquil (healing) heart gives life to flesh, but envy makes bones rot!

If our spirit is crushed, when our heart is grieving, times we are sad or feel unloved or unworthy to receive the good, than we truly need a heart refocus and a life-giving spring refilling! We need to submerse ourselves in the Spring of Christ word.  Maybe we are so crushed and dried up that we need friends who care.  Christian friends, with deep well springs, who can drench us with hope and healing! Sometimes that spring water comes in the form of a gift of a smile, or an encouraging card, or maybe it is some gentle loving correction.  There are times we need to pull into a rest stop on the journey of life and listen to wise counsel and reproof! When we are the receiver of the reproof, we must decide if it is given in a life-giving spirit, and if so we must accept and act on it, to receive intelligence to move us forward in our journey!!  Another form of spring water ( I had not thought of) is someone else’s good news! It does our hearts good to hear good news and to rejoice with others. The teaching of the wise is also a source of spring water to our drought cracked souls, we need to listen and apply the wisdom that is given to us!

Proverbs 15:29 – 33 The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayers of the righteous. The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and good news refreshes the bones. The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise. Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence. The fear of the lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

Proverbs 19:8 Whoever gets sense loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will discover good.

Proverbs 14:27a The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,

Proverbs 13:14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.

Proverbs 14:26a In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence,

Proverbs 3:5-8 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes;  fear the Lord, turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

We can share our good news, give an encouraging word, or maybe we are asked to give life-giving reproof, do so with the fear and joy of the Lord. I know we are all called to be a friend, a person who has a cold drink for the fellow journeyman.  We can all be peace planners, blessing givers, spring cleaners, well diggers, heart healers and soul doctors. It doesn’t take silver or gold or a degree in counseling

Proverbs 16:24 Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.

Proverbs 25:20 Whoever sings songs to a heavy heart is like one who takes off (shares) a garment on a cold day, and like vinegar on soda!

Proverbs 25:25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

Proverbs 12:20 Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.

Proverbs 11:25 Whoever brings blessings will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered!

Caring for someone else out of the full spring we are given by God is truly refreshing and life changing!  If we refuse to share the life-,giving spring water, than we are soon doomed to a broken down shack in the middle of the stinky swamp of self-pity or the desert of lifelessness!! Let’s spread the Spring water around my friends!!

How do you know the difference?

Is this truly a want or need? This is the question I try to ask myself every time I am shopping. To say I love to 2nd hand shop would not be overstating, and I also enjoy the convenience of my amazon prime account. Often I catch myself putting things in my cart because they caught my eye. Shopping in real life or online is fun as long as you don’t have buyers regret later. I have discovered that if I pause before checking out and take a hard look at my cart, and ask myself “want or need?” I am much less likely to have regret later.

Want or need?

I am currently shopping for a new stevia shaker.  This has become a need. I buy my stevia from THM in a baggie and then transfer to my shaker.  The one I use now was from a purchase of stevia a couple years ago, but it is not very air tight and it just looks yucky. Amazon has a couple nice ones, but I am not sure I’ll be happy with them. Will they be air tight, are the holes fine enough, is it durable? I don’t want buyers regret.

Reality Check

I double checked the bank account and decided that it is not a need right now. Funny how that works!

Walking through goodwill last month I saw a cute tote that would work for toy storage. I picked it up and put it in my cart. As I continued shopping I realized I have plenty of similar things at home, crates, totes, baskets ect… maybe I should just re-purpose one of those for toy storage. It is such a freeing feeling to put something back and realize that you don’t need it!

Truly a Need ?

Sometimes there are true needs, like new work or school clothes, new tires, or a vegetable seeds for the garden. If it is a real need, we will find that often we already have the means to fill the need! This is especially true if the budget is tight and we have been careful to not squander our resources. Sometimes we have to get creative and make it ourselves or sell something to purchase something else. Bartering with a friend who has the needed skill could also be an option. I would gladly do sewing for a friend who liked to paint, or babysit for a friend with graphic skills.

It is a tricky thing, Want vs Need ! If we really stop and think about what we have it helps put it into perspective. Working on our spirit of gratitude also help immensely! If we are grateful for what we already have, only then will we truly be satisfied with what we have.

What are your current wants or needs? What have you re-purposed lately to fill a need?

Am I a Homesteader?

Am I a homesteader?

I am a bit of a homesteading junkie! I love the term homesteader, it seams so steady and current. So I ask you, and myself, what does one need to do to “be a homesteader”? What kind of property must you own? Do you have to own livestock or chickens?  Oh wait, maybe I already am, I have goats & chickens! Must you grow all your food? Well than count me out! I decided to check for an official definition to answer this question!

The Definition of a Homesteader.

Lets start with what a homestead is,

homestead

A homestead is a house and surrounding land owned by a family — often, it includes a farmhouse.

Most people have homes, but not everyone has a homestead: that means your family owns more than a house. The homestead often consists of a farmhouse and land devoted to crops or animals. You’ll find a lot more homesteads in rural areas than in cities. Often, a homestead is passed down from parents to children for generations.

What is a Homesteader? A homesteader is a person or family who occupies a homestead! So by definition to be a homesteader you must own a homestead.

I guess I have answered my own question, I am not an official homesteader. I have animals but they do not provide me with income or food (lazy chickens). I do not own the property or the house.

So how do I become a homesteader?  I must be a property owner, of property that can support my family with food from gardens and land enough to raise some type of animal for income and food!

Why would I want to become a homesteader? Oh I can give you reasons all day. Where do I start? I guess a little background on us might help you understand why we want this. We both come from families that are culturally country folk, no city living here. My husband grew up on a working dairy farm. He grew up milking cows, feeding calves, driving tractor and 4-wheelers. There was no lack of things to do.  I grew up upstate NY and spent many hours helping with dairy cows on my paternal grandparents farm or beef cows on my maternal grandparents farm. If we were not on my grandparents farm then we were likely stacking wood for one of my dads firewood customers, or weeding the acre of garden or playing in the stream or in our forest hideouts.

We want our boys to have that life. The chance to experience the hard rewarding work of animal care or harvesting a crop.  The realization of were food comes from and how much work it takes to get it! To grow in their realization that God is an awesome creator to have created all this and blessed us with earth to care for.

We want this life because we really want to grow more, much more, of our own food.  Vegetables & fruit for our own use and possible to sell would be a dream come true. Raising animals for our own meat and also to sell would be wonderful as well! We are working towards this big dream.

“A Goal is just a dream with work boots on” Dave Ramsey

How about you? Are you a real honest to goodness homesteader? Or are you with me, wish and working towards that goal of being a homesteader?
